I have a 2005 Honda Goldwing motorcycle.<\/p>\r\n

<\/p>\r\n

Actually, I had<\/strong> <\/em>a 2005 Goldwing.\u00a0 I recently came across this blog fragment I started writing in 2013.\u00a0 Evidently, Honda had just released the 2014 Goldwing and it was enough to send me on this rant.\u00a0 I don’t know where I was going with it, or what the title means, but I don’t see anything below that I don’t still agree with.\u00a0 When I downsized in 2017, I kept the ’99 Ducati ST4 and sold the Goldwing.\u00a0 I rode the Ducati over 12,000 miles through 19 states that summer, and was very happy with the choice.<\/p>\r\n

Honda finally did do a complete redesign of the Goldwing for the 2018 model year.\u00a0 Unfortunately, mother Honda took the bike in a strange direction, at least from the perspective of someone who likes to ride long distances on a bike that handles well, often with a passenger.\u00a0 I’m hard pressed to find one design change that makes the bike better for sporty 2up touring.\u00a0 Oh well.\u00a0 I’m happy with the lightly used BMW K1600GTL I picked up in 2018.\u00a0 I still get a huge smile every time I open the throttle and a trip to Tennessee is a short ride.\u00a0 We’ll have to wait and see what the 2035 Goldwing looks like.<\/p>\r\n

\"\"<\/a>2025 Update<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

After living with the BMW K1600GTL for a few years, we decided that there were things about the bike that we didn’t like.\u00a0 Yes, it has incredible performance, but that’s hard to take advantage of here in Oklahoma where an hour’s ride might involve eight 90 degree turns.\u00a0 The high center of gravity made slow speed maneuvering, especially two-up, a chore.\u00a0 I grew to dislike the lack of feel in the controls:\u00a0 the twitchy, disconnected ride-by-wire throttle and the clutch with no discernible friction zone.\u00a0 Now that we had more time to consider taking motorcycle trips, it was time for a change.<\/p>\r\n

I still have very fond memories of the 2005 Goldwing and the Goldwing is still the bike to beat for comfortable long distance two-up touring.\u00a0 We considered a newer generation (2018+) of the bike, but the changes that Honda made resulted in a bike that wasn’t as good for our priorities.\u00a0 \u00a0I understand why Honda made the tradeoffs they did.\u00a0 From the Honda technical article “Development of 2018 Goldwing” by Kaita and Nakanishi:<\/p>\r\n

The product should also appeal to men and women in the Generation-X, who are the target users of the next generation, to stay as a long-loved motorcycle.\u00a0 They also addressed such voices that “I want casual use of the motorcycle for a trip to escape from everyday life using a short spare time in daily life.”\u00a0 From such changes of users and usage, we considered it was necessary to leap from the gorgeous & luxurious, massive and heavy line and to regain youthfulness.<\/p>\r\n

Throughout the technical design articles, these design goals are consistently followed:\u00a0 style the bike to appeal to a younger audience and reduce the size and weight to make the bike more sporty for casual riding.\u00a0 That meant trading off things like comfortable seating, large luggage capacity, and wind protection.\u00a0 While I appreciate the increased handling, our primary use case is two person long distance touring.\u00a0 And for that, the latest generation Goldwing doesn’t work as well as the generation 1\/2 GL1800.\u00a0 So we started looking for a older bike.\u00a0 \u00a0After about five months of looking, I came across a 2002 in Arizona with only 8,000 miles.\u00a0 Long story short, a week later I was riding the bike back to Oklahoma.<\/p>\r\n

\"\"<\/a>We’re very happy with the decision.\u00a0 The bike is more comfortable than the K1600GTL and I like the handling characteristics.\u00a0 In a future post, I’ll go through the modifications we’ve made to the bike.\u00a0 And still waiting on that 2035 Goldwing.<\/p>\r\n

The only problem with the Honda Goldwing, GL1800 era, is that it was designed for a narrow target audience. \u00a0For that audience, which values comfortable, long-distance two-up touring, it’s a wonderful bike that more than satisfies. \u00a0And indeed, this is one of the reasons I have one.<\/p>\r\n

You get a good sense of the target demographic by frequenting the various Goldwing forums on the Internet, such as GLriders. \u00a0You might find an advertisement for a Goldwing in the AARP magazine but probably not in Outside or Wired.<\/p>\r\n

It’s shame, for Honda fans, to see the rest of the market continue to advance while the Goldwing does not. \u00a0Beneath the restyled plastic of the latest “new” Goldwing is a platform and set of technology that was designed in the mid-90s. \u00a0 But in the last 20 years, motorcycle technology has advanced greatly. \u00a0For example, I also have a 1999 Ducati ST4. \u00a0This is a bike that, like the Goldwing, is also based on mid-90’s technology, in this case the Ducati 916 superbike that won multiple championships. \u00a0Comparing this bike to the current, state of the art (but still under $20K) BMW consumer sportbike shows just how dramatic the change has been for every component. \u00a0Almost twice the horsepower. \u00a0Computer controlled suspension, traction, power delivery, ABS.\u00a0 Configurable digital instrumentation. \u00a0Slipper clutch. \u00a0Throttle by wire. \u00a0Brakes so powerful a single finger can generate stopping forces over 1 G. \u00a0All with a service interval that is three times longer than that of the Ducati.<\/p>\r\n

Meanwhile, the 2014 Goldwing is basically the same bike sketched on the Honda whiteboard in 1997, and even then it was trailing edge technology.\u00a0 The front suspension is a single, old-style, non-adjustable gas strut (the other fork tube is just a guide) with a primitive anti-dive system that hydraulically locks the suspension when the brakes are applied. \u00a0(Basically, you have no<\/em> <\/strong>front suspension when the brakes are on.) \u00a0The brakes themselves are linked and underpowered for stopping a bike that weighs close to 1,000 pounds wet, not including the rider and pillion (and their farkles, traveling luggage and\/or trailer). \u00a0The radio controls dominate the handle-bar, tank, and dash display, but heaven forbid you want to plug in heated clothing or a GPS.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
